Rectortown, Virginia (2019)

From FB:

“Rectortown, where on the snowy evening of November 7, 1862, General George B. McClellan received word from President Lincoln that he had been relieved as Commander in Chief of the Army of the Potomac after failing to decisively crush Robert E. Lee at Antietam despite having his plan of movement and overwhelming troop superiority, general insolence, and overall lackluster performance.

Upon receiving the orders, General McClellan (who would later be nominated by the Democrat Party to run against Republican President Lincoln in 1864) turned to the genial but unimaginative General Ambrose Burnside and declared, “Well, Burnside, I turn the command over to you.”

The following month, General Burnside would lead his army into a slaughter across the Rappahannock at the Battle of Fredericksburg where Robert E. Lee would famously posit, “It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.”

The Plains, Virginia (2019)

From FB:

“On this stream, Mill Run, about five miles west of Haymarket, was the now forgotten home of legendary early American frontiersman Simon Kenton. He was a friend of Daniel Boone and was once captured and tortured by the Shawnee, who later adopted him as a sign of respect for his ability to endure days of running their gauntlet. He served in the American Revolution, War of 1812, surveyed with George Rogers Clark, married twice, and had a total of 10 children.

The marker for his birthplace is five miles away at the intersection of Sudley Road and Route 15. I doubt anyone ever really even bothers to read it, and I’m certain that aside from the occasional historian, no one deliberately comes out here. Except weirdo history nerds like me.”
