The Judge

“Judge Holden is the principal antagonist of ‘Blood Meridian.’ One of the most frightening things about him is his physical appearance: he is bald, well over six-foot and hairless.

Although few of his crimes are ever directly witnessed by characters in the novel, McCarthy heavily alludes to Holden being a paedophile and carrying out a number of sadistic murders. Perhaps the most unsettling moment is the novel’s final chapter, when Holden and the kid (McCarthy’s protagonist) reunite in a tavern. They hold a philosophical debate, before the kid leaves to go to the nearby outhouse. He discovers Holden naked in the closet and McCarthy leaves the rest to our imagination.

Holden then reappears in the tavern, dancing naked on a table and McCarthy concludes the book by saying that Holden, ‘…never sleeps. He says that he will never die. He dances in light and in shadow and he is a great favourite. He never sleeps, the judge. He is dancing, dancing. He says he will never die’.”

“The Locality Of Hell”

“For the earth is a globe in the void and truth there’s no up nor down to it and there’s men in this company besides myself seen little cloven hoof-prints in the stone clever as a little doe in her going but what little doe ever trod melted rock? I’d not go behind scripture but it may be that there has been sinners so notorious evil that the fires coughed em up again and I could well see in the long ago how it was little devils with their pitchforks had traversed that fiery vomit for to salvage back those souls that had by misadventure been spewed up from their damnation onto the outer shelves of the world. Aye. It’s a notion, no more. But someplace in the scheme of things this world must touch the other. And somethin put them little hooflet markings in the lava flow for I seen them there myself.”

Tobin

“If The Kid has any kind of mentor in [“Blood Meridian Or The Evening Redness In The West”], it’s the ex priest Tobin. We’re not sure why Tobin left the priesthood to become a professional mercenary, but it might have to do with the unfairness he sees in God’s decisions. When he sees the kid repairing a strap, for example, he says:

‘The gifts of the Almighty are weighed and parceled out in a scale peculiar to himself. It’s no fair accountin and I don’t doubt but what he’d be the first to admit it and you put the query to him boldface.'”

“The House Of Yes”

“A mentally unbalanced young woman – who is convinced she is Jackie Kennedy – flies into a murderous rage when her brother returns home to reveal he is engaged.” (1997)

Female Tarantula Hawk

“The female tarantula hawk wasp stings a tarantula between the legs, paralyzes it, then drags the prey to a specially prepared burrow, where a single egg is laid on the spider’s abdomen, and the entrance is covered. When the wasp larva hatches, it creates a small hole in the spider’s abdomen, then enters and feeds voraciously, avoiding vital organs for as long as possible to keep the spider alive. After several weeks, the larva pupates. Finally, the wasp becomes an adult and emerges from the spider’s abdomen to continue the life cycle.”
