Fornacalia

February 17 is the end of the Roman festival of Fornicalia, which was celebrated in honour of the goddess Fornax, a divine personification of the oven (fornax), and was related to the proper baking of bread.

Ovid wrote that ‘the oven was made a goddess, Fornax: the farmers, pleased with her, prayed she’d regulate the grain’s heat.'”

Telemachus

“I had been watching him, as he talked, for his father’s mannerisms, those tricks that were as indivisible from Odysseus as tides from the ocean. The pauses and smiles, the dry voice and deprecating gestures, all wielded against the listener, to convince, to tease, and most of all to mitigate. I had seen none. Telemachus took his blows straight on.”

“Kubla Khan”

“That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome! those caves of ice!
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.”

“Cath…”

“The music video of the song was directed by Autumn de Wilde. The video reflects the song’s lyrics, and the story they tell: A woman named “Cath” (portrayed by Beth Riesgraf) is about to be wed to a “well-intentioned man,” yet she does not love him, and is still infatuated with a former love (portrayed by Lukas Haas) who watches the ceremony. The video was inspired by Emily Brontë‘s famous novel Wuthering Heights, reflecting Catherine Earnshaw and her torment over marrying Edgar Linton (the “well-intentioned man”) when she loves Heathcliff. The band are occasionally shown sitting in what seems to be a dressing room with a grassy floor, with all four members mouthing the lyrics to the song.”

“To stand within the pleasure dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice”
