April 1, 2023

From FB:

“Today it is socially permissible to play tricks and practical jokes until noon. April 1 is the classic Festival of Fools, ruled over by the Norse god Loki.

In every stable society, in order that things should not become too rigid, there are periods where misrule or chaos is permitted for a short, well-defined time. Although Loki is a being who causes much unwelcome trouble, he can perform tasks that no one else can do.

In medieval times this function was performed by the royal jester. Sometimes only the jester could provide the alternative viewpoint, telling the monarch that something was wrong with his or her rule. The jester alone was permitted to speak truthfully, albeit in jest, at times when no one else could speak for fear of punishment.

April 1st also marks the Roman woman’s festival of Fortuna Virilis, seeking good relations with men and ruled over by Venus. The American backwoods’ full moon that falls in April is called the Pink Moon.”
